You elected us to solve the problems, we will make sure your lights stay on – Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to addressing Ghana’s energy challenges and ensuring that the nation avoids a return to the power outages, commonly referred to as “Dumsor.”

Speaking at the National Convention of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Mission Ghana on Thursday, January 9, President Mahama acknowledged the critical issues in the energy sector.

He assured Ghanaians that his government is implementing proactive measures to stabilize the situation and prevent future disruptions in electricity supply.

“We are assuming office at a critical time in our nation’s history. Ghana faces significant challenges, but that is precisely why you elected us. We will take full responsibility for solving these problems and transparently communicate the challenges we face,” the President said.

He urged citizens not to lose hope, adding, “There is a threat of power outages, but my brothers and sisters, don’t despair. You elected us to solve the problems, not to pass blame. I assure you we will ensure your lights stay on.”

President Mahama’s remarks come as the country grapples with fuel shortages for thermal plants and concerns over delayed pipeline maintenance by the West African Gas Pipeline Company (WAPCo). Experts have warned that these issues, if not addressed, could worsen Ghana’s energy crisis.

In a significant development, WAPCo announced on January 9 that it would postpone its planned pipeline maintenance by two weeks.

This decision, reached after intense negotiations led by a technical committee established by Chief of Staff Julius Debrah, has temporarily averted an imminent power crisis.

The maintenance, initially scheduled to begin this week, had been flagged by the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) as a potential threat to the country’s electricity supply.

GRIDCo warned that the combination of fuel shortages for thermal plants and disruptions in gas supply from the pipeline could severely undermine Ghana’s power generation capacity.

President Mahama’s administration has pledged to prioritize resolving these challenges to ensure a sustainable and reliable energy supply for all Ghanaians.
