Drama in Parliament after Speaker refers to NPP MPs as ‘Micro-Minority’

-

There was drama in Parliament on Wednesday, January 8, 2025, after the Speaker, Alban Bagbin, referred to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) lawmakers as a ‘micro-minority.’

The description sparked an immediate protest from the Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, who said it was unbefitting of parliamentary discourse.

The Effutu MP contended that the term undermined the dignity of the NPP caucus.

In expressing their disagreement, the Minority rose amidst chants against the Speaker’s choice of words.

‘The Minority Caucus hereby protests the description given to us by the Speaker,’ he said.

The Speaker acknowledged the concerns of the Minority Leader but was quick to point out that the latter had previously used the term in that context.
