The Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Emmanuel Ashie Moore, has cautioned supporters against rioting and vandalism at state agencies.
According to him, such acts can lead to the loss of life, and the party will remain committed to peace and must, therefore, not encourage such behavior.
In an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen, the former Adentan MP stated that he can only advise NDC supporters to be vigilant, but not to take the law into their own hands.
Ashie Moore’s comment follows reports of attacks on state agencies and assaults on personnel by individuals believed to be NDC supporters.
Two security officers of the Volta Aluminium Company Limited (VALCO) were assaulted on Wednesday when a group reportedly stormed the company’s premises.
They intended to lock the offices of the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Deputy CEO in connection with the end of President Akufo-Addo’s tenure.
However, Mr. Moore has stated that it is not the place of party supporters to embark on such acts, even if they consider them to be reprisals for past events.
He emphasized that a security task force has been deployed to ensure that nobody takes away state properties and that they must be allowed to work effectively.
He has, therefore, urged calm and order, amid calls for NDC supporters to refrain from the acts if they are indeed behind them.
“We must not take the law into our own hands. People may take advantage of the situation and infiltrate, but if any NDC supporter is involved, I will admonish them to stop because if they destroy these things, it will be our cost to bear.
“Security task forces have been put in charge, so we should not hesitate to report to the appropriate quarters for action,” he said.
Reacting to claims that the NDC leadership may not sanction the illegal acts, he retorted, “No party hierarchy; you know President Mahama, Asiedu Nketia, Fifi Kwetey, and you know me, Joseph Yammin; we are not this violent. No party official from the top and the region has sanctioned this, and we disassociate ourselves from it.”
