Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has assured traders at the Kantamanto Market of support to rebuild the facility following a devastating fire that destroyed property and claimed one life.

Speaking during a visit to the market on Monday, Dr. Bawumia expressed his sorrow over the incident, which has left many traders in despair after losing their goods and livelihoods.

“The reason we came here is due to the fire outbreak. We learnt it has burnt completely. I was sad to hear it. Some leaders have been here, but I decided to come here myself. What I have come to see is a sad incident. All the traders have lost everything completely… we know one has also died,” he lamented.

Dr. Bawumia stated that investigations into the cause of the fire are ongoing, with reports suggesting the possibility of arson. However, he stressed the need for the facts to be established before conclusions are drawn.

Amid the tragedy, the Vice President commended efforts by traders to begin reconstructing parts of the market, promising his assistance with essential materials such as wood, cement, and roofing sheets to aid the rebuilding process.

“We will help you to rebuild the market. We know you need wood, cement, and roofing sheets, and we will help you with them,” he assured.

Dr. Bawumia also announced plans to enhance the market’s security by personally funding the installation of CCTV cameras.

“When we are done with the market, we need to provide internal security. As part of the security, I want to install CCTV cameras in Kantamanto. I will bring them myself, so we can install them,” he pledged.

Additionally, he proposed introducing insurance schemes for traders to safeguard against similar future occurrences.

The Vice President’s visit follows widespread calls for government intervention after the fire left countless traders counting their losses.

The market, known for its bustling activity, was reduced to ashes, affecting hundreds of livelihoods.
