The chief of Asiakwa and Nifahene of Akyem Abuakwa Traditional Area in the Eastern Region, Daasebre Twum-Ampofo II, has appealed to chiefs, the general public, and other stakeholders to unite and end illegal mining activities popularly known as galamsey.
According to him, a successful fight against galamsey which is destroying farmlands, water bodies and the environment requires a collective national effort.
Daasebre Twum Ampofo II noted that galamsey has become a crucial national canker and must be tackled head-on to preserve water bodies and forest reserves to promote development and boost tourism.
Daasebre Twum-Ampofo II during an annual community and stakeholder engagement to round off activities earmarked for the year 2024.
He emphasised the need to save the natural resources of the country for posterity.
On the sidelines of his address, the chief promised to drill more boreholes in the years ahead to augment the supply of water in the community.
This was after some Assembly members from Akyem Asiakwa expressed concerns about acute water shortage has persisted for years now, causing hardship for the residents.
According to them, the demand for water is increasing, but the supply is insufficient, making the situation unbearable.
