Francis Sosu reacts to jail term of man who vandalised cars at Parliament

-

Member of Parliament for Madina, Francis Xavier Sosu has announced plans to take up the case of the 33-year-old preacher, Christopher Sorkpa, jailed for vandalising cars in Parliament.

The Human Rights lawyer has said the manner in which the case was handled is another failure of our justice system, citing an incident in 2015 involving one Charles Antwi.

In a post on X, he questioned how someone in his right senses would walk to Parliament and decide to smash windows of cars because he claimed: “God asked him to do so?”

In this regard, Mr Sosu believes that Christopher upon his arrest should have been medically examined to ascertain his mental state before being arraigned before court.
“A person who is not compos mentis can not plead to an offence much less to PLEAD GUILTY,” he bemoaned as he also raised concerns over the absence of a lawyer in court for the suspect.
The incident occurred on December 18, 2024, at about 11:00 a.m.
Sorkpa and his accomplice, Wisdom Ahli sneaked into the Parliament House car park.
Sorkpa, carrying a handbag concealing an earth chisel, used the tool to damage the windscreens of two Toyota V8 vehicles, two Toyota Camry saloon cars, and one Rav 4  vehicle belonging to Members of Parliament and Parliamentary Service staff.
Ahli was reportedly praising Sorkpa as he caused the damage.

Both men were arrested and admitted to the offence in their caution statements, given in the presence of an independent witness.

Christopher on December 20, 2024, pleaded guilty to six counts of conspiracy and causing unlawful damage and was handed the sentence by the presiding judge, Samuel Bright Asiedu.

His accomplice, 41-year-old Ahli, who faces the same charges, was however, remanded into police custody.

The prosecution, led by Superintendent Augustine Yirenkyi, informed the court that Ahli’s charges required amendments and requested an adjournment.

The case has been adjourned to January 9, 2025.
