An Accra Circuit Court has granted bail of ₵100,000 with two sureties to Emmanuel Osei, a former marketing officer accused of embezzling ₵176,693.50 from his previous employer, Clemonic Company Limited, a cement distribution firm.
One of the sureties, the court directed, must be a public servant earning at least ₵2,500 monthly.
Meanwhile, Osei has pleaded not guilty to the charges and is set to appear before the court on January 8, 2025, for cross-examination.
According to Police Chief Inspector Ebenezer Teye-Okuffo, Eugene Twumasi, the complainant and general manager of Clemonic Company Limited, reported the case after discovering irregularities in Osei’s financial dealings as a marketing officer.
Osei’s role involved sourcing customers for the company, coordinating cement deliveries, collecting payments from customers, and depositing these funds into the company’s bank accounts. However, in January 2022, the complainant noticed a discrepancy.
Twumasi found that nearly all customers Osei brought to the company owed a combined amount of ₵176,693.50. Suspicious of this claim, the complainant visited the customers alongside Osei, only to learn that the customers had already paid the owed amounts.
Investigations revealed that Osei had collected the funds but failed to deposit them into the company’s accounts. Instead, he allegedly kept the money and misled the complainant by claiming customers were in debt.
During the investigation, Osei admitted to dishonestly appropriating the funds. A partial recovery of ₵50,000 was made, which was handed over to the complainant.
Additionally, Osei was subsequently charged and brought before the court. He has denied the allegations, maintaining his innocence.
The court presided over by Mrs. Susanna Eduful granted bail and imposed strict conditions to ensure compliance. The case has been adjourned for further proceedings.
