Dutch and Bayer Leverkusen defender, Jeremie Frimpong has expressed a deep connection to his Ghanaian heritage following his arrival in Ghana for a Christmas holiday.
Frimpong, who previously played for Celtic, touched down in the West African nation on Sunday, taking advantage of the Bundesliga’s winter break.
He was welcomed by his family with lively Jamaican songs and traditional dances, highlighting the warmth of his roots.
In an interview, Frimpong shared his emotions about returning to the land of his parents.
“Amazing to come to this welcoming atmosphere for the first time, amazing you know,” he said.
“This is my people so I am so happy to see everybody. I’m so happy to be in Ghana. I’ve always been connected to my Ghanaian roots. Both my parents are Ghanaian, I eat Ghanaian food, and I speak the language. Obviously being here makes it extra special,” he added.
The 24-year-old has had an impressive season, contributing two goals and four assists in 15 Bundesliga matches, along with four assists in six UEFA Champions League games for Bayer Leverkusen.
