Eric Nana Agyemang-Prempeh of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has been declared the Member of Parliament-elect for the Ahafo Ano North constituency after a court-ordered re-collation of election results.
The re-collation, conducted by the Electoral Commission (EC) at its Greater Accra Regional Office, confirmed Agyemang-Prempeh’s victory with 20,353 votes.
His closest contender, Kwasi Adusei of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), secured 20,232 votes.
The re-collation was necessitated by disputes over the initial results, which were marred by violence and chaos at the Ahafo Ano North Collation Centre in Tepa on December 8.
During the original collation process, frustrations over delays led to a violent protest at the center. According to JoyNews reporter Anthony Bryan Opoku, an angry crowd gathered, throwing stones and causing destruction. The unrest escalated, forcing the Electoral Commission to suspend collation activities.
Critical election materials, including ballot papers and pink sheets, were destroyed in the chaos, making it impossible to complete the process at the original venue. Military intervention was required to restore order and disperse the crowd.
In response, the EC rescheduled the re-collation to December 21, conducting it under tight security at its Greater Accra Regional Office.
The Ahafo Ano North constituency is one of nine constituencies undergoing re-collation following court-mandated directives to address disputes over initial results.
