The Member of Parliament for Dormaa East, Paul Twum Berimah, has dismissed claims that Kennedy Agyapong, the former NPP presidential candidate, is responsible for the party’s defeat in the recently concluded 2024 elections.
Speaking on Oyerepa TV on December 20, 2024, Twum Berimah emphasized that voters considered various factors when casting their ballots, making it unfair to single out Agyapong for blame.
He acknowledged that while Agyapong had previously expressed doubts about the NPP’s ability to “break the eight” ahead of the elections, he eventually rallied behind the party’s presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
“Ken is a man of his word. If he won’t do something, no matter what, he won’t. But in this case, he came back to support the party. Even in my constituency, he came to support me and Bawumia,” Twum Berimah said.
He added that, voter decisions were influenced by broader issues, such as unfulfilled promises and infrastructural challenges, rather than individual comments or actions.
“People considered a lot of things before voting—maybe an unfixed road leading to the person’s house or something—so I don’t think Ken must be blamed,” he noted.
The comments come amid widespread speculation within the NPP regarding factors that led to the party’s defeat. Some have pointed fingers at Agyapong’s remarks as contributing to their loss.
Meanwhile, the Electoral Commission Chairperson, Jean Mensa, declared John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) the winner of the 2024 presidential election on December 9, 2024.
Mahama secured 6,328,397 votes, while Dr. Bawumia garnered 4,657,304 votes. The NDC also made history by achieving a parliamentary majority, solidifying its dominance in the elections.
