Asante Kotoko forward, Kwame Opoku, has shared that leaving the club was a difficult decision, especially after his return to the team.
The former Nkronsah Warriors striker rejoined Kotoko on a two-and-a-half-year contract, after departing in 2021 following a standout season.
Before his departure, Opoku was a key player for Kotoko but made the move to Algerian side USM Alger.
Reflecting on his emotional struggle before leaving the club, Opoku told the club’s media team, “Leaving Kotoko was a hard decision for me. The morning before my departure I felt bad about leaving a great club like Kotoko. It wasn’t easy because I had grown attached to the team and the supporters who made me feel at home.”
During his initial spell at Kotoko, the 25-year-old striker had a significant impact, scoring nine goals and establishing himself as a vital player.
Despite his strong performances, he left the club without winning any trophies—a situation he is determined to change upon his return.
“I have to help the team as a whole to achieve its goals to win trophies and compete on the continent. I couldn’t win any trophy in my first stint but I believe this time I have a lot to offer,” he added.
Opoku, who was officially unveiled ahead of Kotoko’s victory over Hearts of Oak last Sunday, is expected to form a strong attacking partnership with the in-form Albert Amoah.
However, it remains uncertain whether he will feature in this weekend’s Matchday 14 fixture against Dreams FC at the Tuba Astro Turf.
