The Electoral Commission (EC) has assured the public that alternative methods are available to verify the results of the Ablekuma North Constituency Parliamentary election, despite the destruction of ballot papers in a fire.
The incident occurred at the Kwashieman Cluster of Schools on Tuesday, December 17, 2024, and resulted in the destruction of electoral materials, including ballot papers and pink sheets.
Speaking to Citi News at an event hosted by the Ghana Center for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana) on Wednesday, December 18, 2024, Dr. Serebour Quaicoe, Director of Training at the Electoral Commission, explained that despite the loss of materials, alternative verification methods could address the disputed results in the constituency.
“The ballot boxes have been burnt, but we have results in other forms. Once we gather and confirm the results from these sources, we can proceed with collation. My concern is that we must not create a precedent where someone can derail the process intentionally,” Dr. Quaicoe stated.
He further warned against a system driven by force or manipulation, emphasizing, “If it becomes a survival of the fittest, where the one who can bully their way through wins, we would be setting a dangerous precedent.
“The voter’s decision must be respected and upheld. Our focus should be on ensuring the integrity of that decision rather than relying on technicalities,” he concluded.
