The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has raised concerns about inadequate security for its personnel during and after the December 2024 elections.
The Commission disclosed that some of its staff were attacked by party supporters, even in the presence of security officers who were outnumbered and unable to ensure the safety of EC officials or facilitate their duties effectively.
Speaking at an event organized by the Ghana Center for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana) on Wednesday, December 18, 2024, to present findings on the 2024 election incidents, Dr. Serebour Quaicoe, Director of Training at the Electoral Commission, called for urgent discussions on enhancing security measures for EC personnel and collation centers.
“We also need to address the security of the processes. Without adequate security, no matter how well you prepare, it will all come to naught,” Dr. Quaicoe emphasized.
He further expressed concerns about the vulnerability of collation centers, stating, “No part of the collation center is safe because people can breach security at any time. The Commission had considered meeting today to review whether re-collation is feasible. I don’t believe collating results—when the outcomes are already known from polling stations—should be a point of contention. We all need to reflect on this,” he urged.
