The Conference of Regional Imams of Ghana has congratulated the President-elect, John Dramani Mahama, and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) on its “decisive majority in Parliament.”

The conference expressed confidence that Mr Mahama would work diligently to justify the trust the nation has placed in him and the NDC, contributing to the building of a better Ghana for all.

The congratulatory message was contained in a statement issued and signed by Alhaji Suallah Abdallah Quandah, the Secretary of the Conference, and made available to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Sunyani on Tuesday, December 17.

The statement read: “Your knowledge and in-depth understanding of the contemporary challenges confronting the nation will position you and the NDC well in addressing the needs of Ghanaians.

“We pray that your qualities as a unifier, a consultative and listening leader, alongside your humility and maturity in dealing with all manner of people, as well as your decisiveness in taking difficult but necessary decisions for the common good, will enable you to achieve your vision for the nation.

“Kindly extend our congratulations to the NDC for the decisive majority in Parliament, and we pray that they act with magnanimity in victory, helping the nation to heal from the intolerance and extreme partisanship of the recent electoral process.

“Our differences are natural and neutral and should not be turned into divisions or antagonism. The idea of the opposition having their say and the government side having their way must be guided by altruism, ensuring we move the nation forward together through shared growth and development.”

The statement further noted, “Parliament represents the people of Ghana, not just some of the people of Ghana,” and called on citizens to appreciate the fact that “we prayed for peaceful elections and to elect a President and Legislature.”

“This has been successfully achieved, and we give thanks and glory to the Almighty Allah,” it added, urging responsible citizenship in the nation’s political discourse.

“As Imams, we shall always pray for the nation and seek the blessings of liberty, equality of opportunities, and prosperity for all,” the statement concluded.
