Ablakwa opposes $300m tax waivers for 1D1F companies

The Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has reaffirmed the Minority’s opposition to the government’s proposal to grant over $300 million in tax waivers to companies under the One District, One Factory (1D1F) initiative.

Speaking on the Floor of Parliament on Monday, December 16, Mr Ablakwa expressed concerns that the proposed waivers would exacerbate Ghana’s fiscal challenges, particularly as the incoming administration plans to abolish nuisance taxes to alleviate hardships on citizens.

He cautioned that the tax exemptions would result in substantial revenue losses, creating financial constraints for the next government.

“A tall list of over 40 tax waivers, Mr. Speaker, will have serious fiscal implications for the next government. Why saddle the next government with such huge revenue losses after being decisively rejected at the polls?

“This is a government claiming it intends to cut obnoxious and nuisance taxes, yet it is creating additional fiscal liabilities for the country. Mr. Speaker, we want to serve notice that we will not support these tax waivers,” he said.

The Minority has urged the government to reconsider its proposal, emphasizing the need for prudent fiscal measures to safeguard Ghana’s economic future.
