Over 600 casual workers involved in the Ofankor to Nsawam rehabilitation project are demanding payment for three months’ worth of salary arrears.
The workers, who have halted work, are insisting that their employers settle the outstanding wages immediately. Their action has brought the project to a standstill, causing significant disruption for commuters who rely on the road.
Speaking to Citi News, the leader of the agitated workers, Anefi Andor, shared the hardship faced by him and his colleagues due to the non-payment of their salaries, describing their situation as unbearable.
“We were told the project was closed without any prior notice. They moved all the necessary materials to the yard and chose only a few people to continue working, while the rest of us were sent home,” he said.
“Until now, they haven’t decided to pay us. They keep claiming they don’t have money, and with the Christmas festivities approaching, it’s getting harder for us. We left our families to come here, and they’ve been calling us, but we have no money.”
He continued, “They eat three meals a day, but we were kept in a workers’ house, starving for about three weeks. So, we’re here to demand what’s rightfully ours.”
The Ofankor to Nsawam rehabilitation project is part of the government’s effort to dualize the entire Accra-Kumasi road.
