La Liga champions Real Madrid will face a potential banana skin in Matchday 17, while title rivals Barcelona will chase three home points in what will be the penultimate block of fixtures for the year 2024 in the Spanish top flight.

Real will face Madrid rivals Rayo Vallecano at the Vallecas Stadium on Saturday night. While Los Franjirrojos have not had a great campaign thus far, they are always ‘up’ for a clash against Los Blancos and would love nothing more than to dent their city rival’s title defence.
“There will be a special atmosphere for when Real Madrid come to our home ground,” said Vallecano attacker Jorge de Frutos. “They are the champions and a great team, but others have shown how to play against them and we hope to capitalise on this knowledge.”
Barcelona, who have ambitions of dethroning Real Madrid as champions of La Liga, will have the chance to respond to their great rival’s result 24 hours later, as they welcome Leganes to the Lluis Companys Olympic Stadium in Montjuic.
Barca have shown a few weaknesses in recent weeks, with coach Hansi Flick demanding complete intensity and dedication from his team to bring them back to their best: “I’ve already said that the result is a consequence of how we played. When you don’t play at 100 percent, you can’t win. It’s as simple as that. If you don’t play at 100% you can’t win. That’s all it is.”
The round gets going on Friday night with Real Valladolid hosting Valencia at the Jose Zorrilla Municipal Stadium, while Saturday will feature Sevilla at home to Celta Vigo, as Los Nervionenses look to Belgian striker Dodi Lukebakio for inspiration.
“Dodi has done great work for us this season, and his improvement is impressive,” noted coach Garcia Pimienta. “He is hungry to score more goals and we need to provide him with the service for that to happen.”
A busy Sunday also features an all-Basque clash between Deportivo Alaves and Athletic Bilbao, Villarreal chasing a home win against Real Betis, and Atletico Madrid having a derby of their own when they welcome Getafe to the Metropolitano Stadium in the Spanish capital.
