The historic election of Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang as Ghana’s first female Vice President has brought her family into the public eye. Prof. Opoku-Agyemang, a renowned educationist and politician, is a proud mother of three children: Dr. Kweku Opoku-Agyemang, Dr. Kwabena Opoku-Agyemang, and Dr. Maame Adwoa Opoku-Agyemang.
Following in their mother’s footsteps, her children have achieved exceptional success in their respective fields, continuing the legacy of academic excellence and societal impact.
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang’s children, each with doctorate degrees and successful careers, embody the adage, “When you educate a man, you educate one person, but when you educate a woman, you educate a whole nation.”
Kweku Opoku-Agyemang
Dr. Kweku Opoku-Agyemang, the eldest son, is an economist and computer scientist based in Toronto, Canada. He is the founder and CEO of Development Economics X, a company that develops economic and social solutions through research, data analysis, and innovative interventions.
Dr. Opoku-Agyemang is also the founder of Machine Learning X, a consulting firm that collaborates with governments, including those of Pakistan, Canada, and the UK, as well as various universities. He serves as an honorary research affiliate at the International Growth Centre.
Dr. Opoku-Agyemang holds a doctorate in Development Studies from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, an M.A. in Economics from Ohio University, and a B.A. in Economics from the University of Ghana.
Kwabena Opoku-Agyemang
Dr. Kwabena Opoku-Agyemang is an academic director at the School for International Training Ghana and a senior lecturer at the University of Ghana, Legon.
He holds an undergraduate degree, two master’s degrees, and a Ph.D. in English literature. He earned his Ph.D. from West Virginia University, where he also taught undergraduate courses in the Department of English.
Maame Adwoa Opoku-Agyemang
Dr. Maame Adwoa Opoku-Agyemang, the youngest of the three, has an impressive academic background, having attended institutions such as the University of Ghana, the University of Cape Coast, Sorbonne University, and the University of Toronto.
She was a postdoctoral fellow at Johns Hopkins University and the 2020–21 Du Bois-Mandela-Rodney Fellow at the University of Michigan.
Dr. Opoku-Agyemang holds a Ph.D. in Comparative Literature from the University of Toronto, an M.A. in Bilingual Translation from the University of Cape Coast, and a Master’s in Literature from Sorbonne University. She is the author of Typologies of Humor in African Literatures and currently serves as a faculty member in the Law, Humanities, and Social Sciences department, as well as the Director of the Writing Centre at Ashesi University.
The remarkable achievements of Prof. Opoku-Agyemang’s children reflect their mother’s influence and dedication to education, and they continue to make significant contributions in their fields.
