Asamoah Gyan rallies support for President-elect, John Mahama [Video]

Former Black Stars captain, Asamoah Gyan, has called on Ghanaians to support President-elect, John Dramani Mahama as he returns to office.

Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), triumphed over the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), marking his comeback to the presidency after eight years in opposition.

In a social media post, Gyan congratulated the new government and urged citizens to prioritize national unity above political divisions.

“You know, when there is an issue, I will share my thoughts. Let’s support the government. Any government that comes to power, let’s support them. When you go and buy things at GHC 50 and you sell them at GHC 1000, the country will go through hardship,” he remarked.

The football legend emphasized the importance of a collaborative approach for the country’s success: “Ghana has decided. Let’s put party politics aside, and if your party has won, focus on government, and for us as citizens, we will also support.”

Gyan also stressed the need for a change in mindset to drive progress under the new administration.

“We also have to change our attitudes, and we have to support the new government. Let’s congratulate the new government, and that is my message,” he stated.

“So as a good citizen or as a loyal citizen of this country, this is my message for you: Let’s congratulate the ruling party, which is the NDC, and let us support them, not sabotage them,” he added.

Though Gyan had previously been involved with the NPP’s 2024 manifesto team, chairing the Youth and Sports sub-committee, he distanced himself from partisan politics in September 2024, citing a focus on humanitarian work and youth development.

Gyan remains a national icon, holding the record as Ghana’s all-time top scorer with 51 goals in 109 appearances.
