President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has assured President-elect John Mahama of his utmost support to ensure a seamless transition into office.

Akufo-Addo has acknowledged how crucial the process is to protect the interests of Ghanaians.

The President pledged his commitment as part of a meeting with his successor at the Jubilee House on Wednesday.

The President told journalists that this preliminary meeting was “To assure him of my full support and that of my government over the transitional process to make sure that this administration takes off in the best of conditions.”

Mr Mahama accepting Akufo-Addo’s assurance also appreciated him for the warm reception.

“We had a very cordial meeting. At the time he called, he suggested 11 am this morning to have the preliminary meeting towards setting up the transitional team. And that meeting has just ended, was very cordial, and I think we were very happy to be together,” he said.

He further expressed his optimism about the transition process and cooperation in due course.

“I’m happy at the assurance he has given us that we’re going to work together in the interest of Ghana to ensure a seamless transition, and I believe that even after that transition, it will be necessary for us to continue to keep a channel of communication so that Ghana’s democratic credentials are consolidated and we all work together in the national interest,” Mr Mahama added.

On Tuesday, Mr Mahama announced a 10-member transition team tasked with overseeing the smooth transfer of power from the outgoing administration.

Akufo-Addo has also appointed his team members to be chaired by Chief of Staff Frema Osei Opare.

In a related development, Nsawam-Adoagyiri MP and Majority Chief Whip, Frank Annoh-Dompreh has appealed to the President to suspend the process.

The transition process, he said should continue only after all parliamentary seats in contention are resolved.
