Executive Council Member of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kwesi Appiah has urged Ghana’s President-elect, John Dramani Mahama, to focus on investing in youth football for the country’s future development.
Mahama is set to take office on January 7, 2025, following his victory in the 2024 elections with 56.55% of the vote.
Speaking in an interview, Appiah stressed the importance of increasing investment at the grassroots level.
“He [Mahama] should try to invest in the developmental level,” Appiah, who now serves as the head coach of Sudan said.
“If we don’t prioritize the future and only focus on the present, there will come a time when we won’t have a future” he added.
Appiah emphasized that one of Ghana’s biggest challenges lies in depending on the current talent pool instead of developing the next generation of players.
“I think that is one of the nation’s challenges right now because we depend on what we currently have instead of thinking about who we are developing to take over. We need to focus on that and provide the necessary support,” he added.
The Black Stars will miss the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco, marking the first time in two decades they will not participate in the prestigious tournament.
