Christian Council congratulates Mahama, urges peace amid post-election violence

The Christian Council of Ghana has congratulated President-elect John Dramani Mahama on his overwhelming victory in the December 7th elections.

They also commended the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for his swift concession, which demonstrated commitment to democratic principles.

“The Eminent Persons Group (EPG) of the Christian Council of Ghana extends heartfelt congratulations to President-elect His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, for his overwhelming victory in the Presidential and Parliamentary elections held on Saturday, December 7th,” a statement signed by the Co-Chairman, Eminent Persons Group, Most Rev Dr Paul Boafo noted.

Expressing concern over post-election violence, including the burning of the Electoral Commission office in Damongo and attacks on public officials’ residences, the Council condemned these acts, which have led to property damage and loss of lives.

They urged Ghanaians, particularly supporters of both the NDC and NPP, to uphold peace and refrain from violence.

Citing biblical teachings, the Council called for calm and unity, reminding citizens that the country’s progress depends on collective efforts and respect for democracy.

“As we navigate this critical juncture, we arc reminded of biblical teachings that guide us through times of defeat. Proverbs 15:1 states, “A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.” This wisdom encourages us to respond with grace rather than aggression. Additionally, Philippians 4:6-7 reminds us not to be anxious about anything but to present our requests to God with thanksgiving, allowing His peace to guard our hearts and minds.

“We call upon both leadership and supporters from all political affiliations to prioritize peace and stability during this crucial period in our country’s development. The future of Ghana depends on our ability to come together as one nation, regardless of our political differences,” portions of the statement indicated.

They also commended the Ghana Police Service for efforts to restore order and encouraged leaders to prioritise stability and reconciliation.

The Christian Council appealed to all Ghanaians to embrace peace and work together to build a united and prosperous nation.
