Election 2024: GJA condemns attack on Ghana Fact-Checking Coalition team member in Tamale

-

The  Chairperson of the Ghana Journalist Association (GJA) in the Northern Region, Abdul-Majeed Yakubu, has condemned the attack on a member of the Ghana Fact-Checking Coalition’s Media Situation Room in Tamale.

Yahaya Masahudu was attacked on Sunday, December 8, 2024, while covering a looting incident at the Tamale Metropolitan Assembly warehouse and the NADMO office within the premises of the Public Works Department.

“Such a thing should not be happening in this day and age, especially when the election went on peacefully without any disturbance,” Mr. Abdul-Majeed Yakubu stated in an interview.

According to Yahaya Masahudu, some of the marauding young men ambushed and physically manhandled him, seizing his mobile phone, which he was using to record the alleged criminal acts in the process. He was later rescued by some onlookers who whisked him away from the area.

“I’m still working around the clock to ensure that the phone is retrieved. But let me be frank and sincere with you, we condemn that act in no uncertain terms,” the Chairperson of GJA in the Northern Region further said.

Masahudu is a member of the local contingent of the coalition’s media situation room operating in Tamale. He leads a team that monitors offline instances of mis and disinformation arising due to the 2024 general elections.

The coalition has condemned the attack on its staff and called on the police and relevant authorities to take action to bring the perpetrators to justice.
