The Coalition of Domestic Election Observers (CODEO) has appealed to the public to remain calm and allow the Electoral Commission (EC) to officially declare the results of Ghana’s December 7 general elections.
This call comes amid rising tensions and demands from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for greater transparency in the electoral process.
In a preliminary post-election briefing on Sunday, December 8, CODEO urged Ghanaians to trust the constitutional process, noting that the EC’s handling of polling station setups and ballot counting was largely credible.
According to CODEO, 99% of political party agents and all presiding officers at polling stations signed the parliamentary results declaration forms, highlighting the integrity of the process.
The coalition confirmed receiving comprehensive data from its representative sample of 1,500 polling stations nationwide, spanning all regions and constituencies. This, they said, reinforces the credibility of the election and offers additional validation of the results.
“The arrangement by the Electoral Commission, from setup to the counting of ballots at polling stations, was generally adequate and credible,” CODEO stated during the briefing.
CODEO also highlighted the importance of the Parallel Vote Tabulation (PVT), which provides an impartial verification of the EC’s results once officially declared.
“As of midnight on December 7, CODEO had received results from all 1,500 PVT national representative polling stations across every region and constituency in Ghana,” the coalition added.
Ghanaians were encouraged to uphold the nation’s democratic values and maintain peace while awaiting the EC’s official announcement of the election results.
“CODEO will release its PVT estimate after the EC performs its constitutional duty of announcing the official results of the presidential election. The PVT will provide an impartial verification of the officials’ presidential results announced by the EC”.
“We commend the EC, the security taskforce, the media, political parties, and particularly the Ghanaian public for their peaceful participation,” said CODEO. “We also acknowledge the early concession by the NPP presidential candidate, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.
