Former Minister for Interior, Ambrose Dery, has been defeated in the Nandom Constituency parliamentary race by the NDC’s Richard Kuuire, marking the end of Dery’s bid for a fourth term in Parliament.
Mr. Dery secured 10,706 votes, representing 42.9% of the total valid votes cast, while Kuuire garnered 13,743 votes, or 55.2%, winning the seat by a margin of 3,037 votes. Nyine-Kakoni Delle Stella Saabedaar of the Ghana Union Movement (GUM) managed 114 votes.
Nandom Constituency was one of only three constituencies held by the NPP in the Upper West Region going into the 2024 elections.
However, provisional results indicate the other two constituencies—Sissala East and Lambussie—have also fallen to the NDC. This leaves the NPP without a seat in the Upper West Region.
Mr. Dery’s loss is further reflected in the presidential election results in the constituency, where John Dramani Mahama of the NDC won decisively, securing 15,040 votes (60.4%) compared to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of the NPP, who obtained 8,816 votes (35.4%).
Other presidential candidates received the following votes:
- Daniel Augustus Laryea: 102
- Christian Kwabena Andrews: 33
- Kofi Akpaloo: 14
- Mohammed Frimpong: 9
- Nana Akosua Frimpomaa Kumankuma: 42
- Hassan Abdulai Ayariga: 38
- Kofi Koranteng: 5
- George Twum-Barima-Adu: 17
- Nana Kwame Bediako: 33
- Alan John Kwadjo Kyerematen: 56
Out of 24,913 total votes cast in the presidential election, 708 ballots (2.84%) were rejected.
The election, conducted across 90 polling stations in the constituency, proceeded peacefully without any incidents. Results from all eleven constituencies in the Upper West Region are still being collated at the Regional Collation Centre.
