More police deployed after ballot boxes destroyed at Ayawaso Central

-

Some ballot boxes and papers from the just-ended general elections have been destroyed by unidentified men at the Ayawaso Central collation centre in Accra, plunging the area into chaos.

The incident occurred at the ATTC School, where the collation of results was expected to take place.

According to reports, the group clashed with police officers, while Electoral Commission (EC) officials were seen fleeing with ballot boxes in an attempt to protect the materials.

Earlier, security personnel struggled to differentiate between accredited individuals and unaccredited residents, many of whom claimed they were present to assist in safeguarding the ballots.

Tensions escalated when a group of youth accused the EC of handling “fake ballots” and began destroying some of the boxes.

The situation quickly spiraled out of control, forcing EC officials to hold on to their materials while police called for reinforcements to restore order.

More police officers have since been deployed to help regain control and protect the integrity of the collation process.
