La Liga preview: Girona host Real Madrid as Athletic Bilbao clash with Villarreal

Real Betis and Girona will chase the scalps of Barcelona and Real Madrid respectively in the pick of Matchday 16 in La Liga, which will see 10 fixtures played from Friday 6 to Monday 9 December 2024.

Real Betis will welcome Barcelona to the Benito Villamarin Stadium late on Saturday afternoon as they look to end a five-game losing streak against the Catalans in league football which stretches back to 2022.

Los Verdiblancos manager Manuel Pellegrini is well aware of the threat posed by the Blaugrana – especially after the form they have shown under his counterpart Hansi Flick this season – but the Chilean tactician is hopeful of a home win.

“We need to approach it with the necessary seriousness to win; given time and space, everyone plays well. We hope it will be a demanding match in terms of individual performances,” said Pellegrini.

Later on Saturday evening, Girona will host Real Madrid at the Montilivi Municipal Stadium. The Blanquivermells have not recaptured the outstanding form they demonstrated through the course of last season, while the same could be said of Los Blancos – especially when it comes to integrating Kylian Mbappe into their line-up.

“Mbappe is down like everyone else, but motivated to get through this moment,” manager Carlo Ancelotti explained. “The problem he’s having is everyone’s problem. You could point at Vinicius [Junior], Rodrygo or [Jude] Bellingham. It is a difficult moment for everyone.”

Sunday features Athletic Bilbao chasing a home win over Villarreal, while Atletico Madrid will look to capitalise on Sevilla’s troubles when they host the Andalusian side at the Metropolitano Stadium in the late-evening match, while Monday brings a clash between Getafe and Espanyol at the Coliseum Stadium.

Both teams have struggled for consistency this season, though Getafe can at least point to the explosive talent of 21-year-old Nigerian midfielder Christantus Uche, who has been linked with a move to the likes of Chelsea and Everton, as evidence that they have a greater ceiling of potential compared to their visitors.
