The previous round in Qatar saw Red Bull Racing Max Verstappen celebrate his fourth successive Drivers’ World Championship – secured the round prior in Las Vegas – by claiming a ninth full-length race win of the season.
“We weren’t sure how quick we would be here, but it was great to be able to win another race,” said Verstappen. “Hopefully we can continue next week in Abu Dhabi and end the season on a high.”
Verstappen was followed home by Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc and McLaren’s Oscar Piastri – representatives of the fight for the Constructors’ Championship, which is set to go down to the wire.
McLaren hold a 21-point lead over Ferrari at the top of the log, though Leclerc is hopeful that the ‘Scuderia’ will be able to make a late overtake at the Yas Marina Circuit and win the team title.
“We will keep fighting right to the last lap at Abu Dhabi,” said the Monegasque driver. “Anything can happen in the final round, so Carlos [Sainz, Ferrari teammate] and I will do our best to help the team win. It will be difficult because McLaren have been so fast this year and they have very good drivers, but maybe we will get to have a big celebration in the end.”
McLaren’s Lando Norris was disappointed to only finish 10th in Qatar after receiving a heavy penalty for failing to slow for yellow flags.
“The team gave me a great car today, so I’m thankful for the team. Disappointed that I couldn’t have done a worse job than I did today, and not give them the points they deserved. So I’ve made the job of the team much harder than it needs to be. The team are doing a great job but I’ve let them down,” said the British pilot.
The Abu Dhabi GP has been on the F1 calendar since 2009 and has been dominated by Verstappen in recent years, with the Dutchman claiming victory in 2020, 2021, 2022 and 2023. Only Lewis Hamiton has won more races in Abu Dhabi (five), but his last triumph was back in 2019.
