Kwesi Nyantakyi, the former President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), has spoken out about the recent underwhelming performances of the Black Stars.
The senior national team has had series of disappointing results, with only one win in their last nine matches across three international tournaments.
At the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, Ghana, a four-time AFCON champion, failed to progress past the group stage, finishing without a single win for the first time in the tournament’s history.
During the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, the Black Stars managed only one victory and were eliminated in the group stage, ending up at the bottom of their group.
In the 2023 AFCON held in Ivory Coast, Ghana once again fell short, exiting in the group stage without a win.
Their struggles continued as they failed to qualify for the 2025 AFCON, which will be hosted in Morocco.
After six matches in the qualification campaign, Ghana registered three draws and three losses, marking their first absence from the tournament in 20 years.
Reflecting on the team’s recent form, Nyantakyi, who once served as a member of the FIFA Executive Council, expressed concern over the sharp decline in the Black Stars’ performance.
Speaking to Lawson FM, he said, “Black Stars challenges are not normal.”
Nyantakyi added, “Maybe when I was in charge, I was doing things differently. If you look at the coaches who coached the Black Stars, it is not the same as today,” he added.
The Black Stars will be looking to improve their performances when they face Chad and Madagascar in March 2025 as part of the 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign.
