2024 Presidential candidates urged to commit to anti-galamsey pact

-

The Ghana Coalition Against Galamsey (GCAG) has extended an invitation to all presidential candidates in the 2024 elections to sign a National Pledge Against Illegal and Irresponsible Mining.

This initiative, launched in collaboration with the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) and other civic organizations, seeks to affirm political commitment to eradicating galamsey and its destructive effects on Ghana’s waterbodies, forests, and public health.

Describing the pledge as a critical step towards addressing one of the country’s most urgent environmental crises, the GCAG noted, “By signing this pact, presidential candidates will demonstrate their resolve and leadership in tackling galamsey, inspiring nationwide action to protect our environment for future generations.”

The Coalition stressed the importance of joint efforts involving political leaders, civil society, traditional authorities, and local communities in combating illegal mining.

“This is a shared responsibility,” the GCAG stated, emphasizing that the pledge represents a renewed social contract rooted in environmental stewardship and accountability.

To promote transparency, the GCAG will hold a press conference on Thursday, December 5, 2024, at the International Press Centre.

The event will reveal the names of the candidates who have endorsed the pledge. Media outlets have been urged to attend and amplify the initiative’s call for nationwide action.
