Communications Director of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Henry Asante-Twum has disclosed that the Association paid over $100,000 in compensation to former Black Stars coach Milovan Rajevac after his dismissal.
Rajevac, who succeeded CK Akonnor as head coach, was relieved of his duties following the team’s elimination in the group stage of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cameroon.
His termination came after the Sports Ministry instructed the GFA to reorganize the Black Stars Management Committee.
In an interview with Joy Sports, Asante-Twum discussed the financial strain the GFA experienced in settling Rajevac’s outstanding payments.
“When Milo [Milovan Rajevac] was fired, it became an issue because he didn’t have time to waste, so he went to FIFA,” Asante Twum explained.
“FIFA ruled in Milo’s favour, and we had to pay over $100,000. It was about $117,000 or so. Despite several pleas, the Ministry wasn’t forthcoming, so the FA had to settle the amount,” he added.
This experience, he noted, has influenced the GFA’s cautious approach in evaluating the future of current Black Stars coach Otto Addo.
Addo, who failed to lead the team to qualify for the 2025 AFCON tournament, has faced significant criticism, with many football fans calling for his dismissal.
Following an extended meeting, the Executive Council has yet to reach a decision regarding Addo’s tenure.
Ghana’s failure to qualify for the 2024 AFCON marked a major setback for the Black Stars, who finished last in Group F with only three points, missing out on the tournament for the first time in 21 years.
The GFA’s financial difficulties in compensating sacked coaches, alongside the team’s poor performance, have intensified calls for reforms in the management of the national football team.
