Former Kumbungu Member of Parliament, Abdulai Mohammed Mubarak, popularly known as Ras Mubarak, has filed a lawsuit against Scancom PLC, operators of MTN Ghana, accusing the telecommunications giant of failing to provide roaming services during his recent trip outside Ghana.
In his writ, the former MP stated that he has been a loyal customer of MTN Ghana for over 20 years, relying on both prepaid and postpaid services.
As a frequent traveler, he emphasized his dependence on MTN’s internet services, noting that he consistently activates the company’s roaming service before traveling abroad.
Ras Mubarak recounted that in September, prior to traveling to the United Arab Emirates, he activated the roaming service on his device.
However, upon arrival, he was unable to access mobile services, including making or receiving calls, sending or receiving SMS messages, and accessing internet data.
He described the experience as leaving him “stranded for an entire week without a mobile network connection.”
Despite lodging multiple complaints with MTN Ghana, the issue remained unresolved.
Mr Mubarak claims the disruption caused significant damage, including lost business opportunities, reputational harm, and challenges in managing family responsibilities, as he was unable to send money to his wives and children back home.
He added that he had to rely on loans from employees and associates to manage his expenses during the trip.
The former MP stated that MTN’s failure caused him “severe emotional and psychological anguish,” as well as “irreparable embarrassment” given his status as a public figure.
He is seeking $5 million in compensation for the “loss of business opportunities, inconvenience, hardship, and embarrassment” caused by MTN Ghana. Additionally, he is demanding that the company cover any further expenses incurred in pursuing legal redress.”
