The Ghana Federation for Disability Organizations has made an emotional call for peace as the nation approaches the December 7 elections, highlighting the vulnerability of persons with disabilities (PWDs) in times of unrest.
The group emphasized that PWDs often bear the brunt of chaos during conflicts, making stability crucial for their safety and participation in the democratic process.
At an event in Kumasi marking the International Day for Persons with Disabilities, the federation’s leadership expressed concern over the risks PWDs face during election-related unrest, referencing incidents in Techiman South and Odododiodoo constituencies during the 2016 election.
Joseph Atsu, President of the Federation, and other members urged political stakeholders to ensure a peaceful environment, allowing PWDs to cast their votes without fear. A representative stated, “War and chaos affect everyone, but for us, it’s a matter of survival. We cannot run for our lives if trouble erupts.”
Francis Osei Nsiah, the Ashanti Region Electoral representative, reassured the Federation that PWDs would experience smooth voting and receive the protection they deserve during and after the election. The event reinforced the call for inclusive participation and the safeguarding of the rights of persons with disabilities during this critical period.
