The Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has called for an independent investigation into the Food and Drugs Authority’s (FDA) decision to extend the shelf life of 22,000 bags of rice distributed to secondary schools.
While the FDA maintains that its approval process followed regulatory standards and best practices, Ablakwa expressed concerns about the potential health implications for students who consumed the rice.
In an interview with Citi News, Ablakwa stressed the importance of transparency and accountability, urging both local and international audits of the FDA’s actions.
“The FDA’s conduct has only raised more questions, which is why an independent inquiry into this matter is essential. Perhaps the one positive from their press conference is their willingness to subject themselves and their actions in this controversy to investigation,” he stated.
Ablakwa also criticized the government’s handling of the issue, saying, “It is truly disappointing that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, a leader who seems disengaged, has taken no action on this matter.”
