Lawyers for Shalimar Abbiusi, spokesperson for the New Force Movement, have pledged to enforce a compensation order issued by an ECOWAS court against the Government of Ghana.
Ms. Abbiusi was arrested and deported after being accused of using forged documents to obtain a residence permit as a student at Ghana Christian University College.
Despite being granted bail and having charges dropped by the Ghana Immigration Service, she was rearrested and deported on December 20, 2023.
Her lawyer, Francis-Xavier Sosu, expressed determination to ensure compliance with the court’s ruling.
“We expect to have the judgment by Monday, God willing, after which we will initiate the necessary processes. This case is not solely about the compensation, but also about addressing the violation of her right to liberty and the unresolved issues surrounding her deportation,” he explained.
Mr. Sosu also highlighted concerns about the impact of the deportation on Ms. Abbiusi’s personal assets.
“She had acquired some assets, but due to the abrupt manner of her deportation, these remain unresolved. We hope this decision will pave the way for her to not only receive compensation but also recover her belongings and assets, which are currently in limbo.”
