2024 Polls: NDC backs IGP’s ‘no guns at polling stations’ directive

-

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has commended the Inspector General of Police (IGP) for directing that no firearms will be allowed at polling stations during the 2024 general elections, including those carried by security personnel.

Speaking after a police briefing with representatives from all political parties on election security preparations, Edward Omane Boamah, the NDC’s Director of Elections and IT, reaffirmed the party’s commitment to collaborating with security agencies.

He also expressed confidence in the support of security personnel during the special voting scheduled for December 2.

“We are pleased that the security agencies have stated that no firearms will be permitted at polling stations. This is a positive development. We are also encouraged to know that the military will only be involved as a last resort, with the IGP, as the head of the elections security task force, being the sole authority to authorize such intervention,” Dr. Boamah stated.

“The IGP’s role as the Commander-in-Chief of the elections security task force ensures that any decision regarding military involvement rests solely with him. This clarity places the responsibility for any military intervention squarely on the IGP and no other individual,” he emphasized.
