The West African Examination Council (WAEC) has hinted at the possible cancellation of some BECE examination results due to exam malpractices.
Speaking on Adom FM’s Burning Issue, the Head of Public Affairs, John Kapi, stated that about 99% of the BECE results have been released, while others are still under review due to alleged malpractices.
He added that some results will be cancelled because the evidence before them suggests that certain candidates engaged in exam malpractices.
“As for the results, we have been able to release about 99% of them, but for the remaining ones that haven’t been released, the majority of them will definitely be cancelled because, based on the evidence before us, it shows there was engagement in exam malpractices by the candidates,” he said.
Stressing the seriousness of the malpractices, John Kapi cited invigilators and teachers as the major culprits, as they assist candidates in engaging in these malpractices.
He further explained that some invigilators do not fully understand the questions and end up solving them for the candidates.
“Cases of exam malpractices this year have increased because teachers who have been made invigilators attempt to help the candidates in solving their questions. Some even solve the questions and write them for the candidates to copy.”
“But the invigilators sometimes may give out wrong answers because, for example, English teachers are assigned to invigilate mathematics students so they won’t be tempted to help the students,” he added.
Kapi also mentioned that 19 invigilators, who were teachers, have been arrested and dismissed from the teaching profession for their involvement in exam malpractices.
