The Ghana Police Service has established a National Security Elections Task Force Briefing Centre to provide regular updates throughout the 2024 general election period.
This initiative is part of efforts to ensure a smooth and peaceful electoral process.
The briefing centre aims to combat misinformation and disinformation that could undermine the credibility of the elections and address potential incidents of violence before, during, and after the polls.
Speaking at a press briefing, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, announced plans for close collaboration with telecommunication companies to enhance communication efficiency.
Dedicated contact numbers will be assigned to enable direct and real-time communication between the media and the Police Management Board (POMAB).
These numbers will be shared with journalists to facilitate quick and accurate reporting of emergencies or incidents during the elections.
Dr. Dampare noted that this initiative would allow the police to respond swiftly, ensuring the safety and security of voters and election officials.
“We are working with the telcos to assign us a dedicated number to be used in this room. This number will be shared with the media, political parties, and other stakeholders. Wherever you are, if a situation arises that needs immediate attention, you can directly access me or any of the commissioners and team members on the ground,” he stated.
Dr. Dampare also emphasized the importance of collaboration among the police, media, and public to maintain peace and order.
“We will adopt an engagement approach by involving all stakeholders at the highest level to manage the process effectively,” he added.
