2024 Polls: NDC accuses Brigadier General of election-rigging plot

-

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has alleged a plot by President Akufo-Addo to rig the 2024 election in the Ashanti Region for the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

According to the NDC, Akufo-Addo has tasked the General Officer Commanding Central Command of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), Brigadier General Michael Opoku, to execute the plan.

NDC National Communications Officer Sammy Gyamfi made these claims at a press conference on Tuesday, with 18 days remaining until the December 7 election.

As part of the alleged strategy, Gyamfi claimed that Brigadier General Opoku was recently promoted to his current position.

“In his current role, Brigadier General Michael Opoku has been tasked by Akufo-Addo to carry out a well-crafted scheme designed by the NPP to rig the upcoming elections, particularly in the Ashanti Region, through ballot stuffing, swapping of ballot boxes, swapping of pink sheets, and other clandestine activities starting with the special voting exercise scheduled for December 2 this year,” he claimed.

He added that the military officer should have been reprimanded for his role in the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election violence but was instead rewarded with a promotion.

He further alleged that the officer has been promised the position of Chief of Defence Staff if the NPP wins the 2024 election.

“Having relocated his family to the United Kingdom, Brigadier General Opoku has vowed to do whatever it takes to carry out his shady election-rigging plot in exchange for the position of Chief of Defence Staff in the unlikely event that the NPP wins the 2024 election,” he said.

Mr. Gyamfi also alleged that the NDC has received intelligence that Brigadier General Opoku is training NPP thugs at the Asutuare military camp.

“Brigadier General Opoku plans to clothe these bandits in military apparel to unleash violence on NDC agents, supporters, and innocent civilians on Election Day.”
