2024 Polls: Women must be included in sports facility planning – Prof. Opoku-Agyemang

The running mate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, has expressed concerns over the lack of inclusivity in the planning and construction of AstroTurfs across Ghana.

Speaking at a gender empowerment series held at the Labadi Beach Hotel on Monday, November 18, she emphasized the importance of inclusive decision-making processes that address the diverse needs of all citizens.

Her presentation, titled “Advancing Gender Equality: A National Dialogue on Current Policies and Innovative Measures for Local and National Impact,” explored how public infrastructure projects, including sports facilities, can either bridge or widen gender inequality gaps.

The former Minister of Education highlighted the systemic exclusion of women and girls in the planning of these projects, questioning whether their needs and schedules had been adequately considered.

She pointed out that such oversight reflects broader structural inequalities in Ghanaian society.

“I see beautiful AstroTurfs dotted across our country, and while I admire their aesthetics, I ask myself, is gender sensitivity a consideration? I have not seen a single girl on any of these AstroTurfs, and I wonder why,” she remarked.

“Were women part of the discussions before these facilities were constructed? Were their preferences and availability taken into account? Even in sports, we seem to be perpetuating gender inequality.”

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang concluded by urging policymakers and stakeholders to prioritize inclusivity in infrastructure development, ensuring that all segments of society—especially women—benefit equally.

“As we plan for the future, let us reflect on the spaces we create and ensure they foster equal opportunities for everyone,” she added.
