We are one of the top electoral bodies in Africa – EC

The Electoral Commission (EC) has praised its operations while dismissing claims of public mistrust ahead of the December 7 election.

The latest Afrobarometer survey by the Ghana Center for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana) revealed that public perception of the EC as corrupt is on the rise.

Despite the EC’s commitment to conducting a credible, free, and fair election, the survey showed that only 28% of respondents expressed trust in the Commission.

The report highlighted that a significant portion of the population doubts the EC’s independence and impartiality.

However, the Deputy EC Chairperson, Dr. Bossman Asare, in an interview, has fought off the assertion.

Dr. Asare emphasized the EC’s readiness to ensure a credible election, stating that stringent measures, including deploying advanced biometric systems, rigorously training poll staff, and strengthening oversight mechanisms at all polling stations, have been put in place.

“You talk about the quality of elections in Africa, Ghana is one of the best on the continent. Ghana is one of the best in the business.

“So regarding this forensic audit issue you just mentioned, you remember as soon as we had a meeting publicly, which was televised nationally, all Ghanaians saw that the EC had nothing to hide,” he stated.

He entreated Ghanaians to have faith in the Commission’s track record regarding the successful conduct of previous elections.
