Two additional senior high schools (SHS) in the Ashanti Region have received computer tablets and accessories.
This is part of the government’s One Student One Tablet initiative, launched by President Nana Akufo-Addo in March.
With this latest distribution, the total number of beneficiary schools in the region under the first phase rollout now stands at 18 senior high and TVET schools.
While some schools have already received the tablets, they are yet to distribute them to students—a delay that has raised concerns from members of the education committee in parliament.
Asanteman Senior High School in Kumasi confirmed the receipt of 4,404 tablets, while Konongo Odumase Senior High School received 4,256 tablets along with accessories.
Sixteen other schools in the region have also confirmed receiving tablets, though distribution to students has not yet started.
School officials, speaking anonymously, indicated that full distribution and use of the tablets would likely begin once the admission processes for first-year students in the 2024/25 academic year are completed.
This distribution marks a key step toward a full rollout of the initiative, which aims to digitalise education in Ghana as the country embraces the opportunities of the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
The tablets will provide students with access to textbooks and other learning materials to support their studies.
Through the Education Ministry, the government is working to transform existing facilities in public senior high schools into Smart Schools, with plans to build new structures where necessary.
These facilities will include classrooms equipped with digital tools such as Smart Boards, computers, and internet connectivity to enhance digital learning.
