The Founder of the Centre for Alternative Politics and Security West Africa (CAPS-WA), Dr. Muhammad Dan Suleiman, has stressed the need to be cautious with the use of freedom of speech, especially as the country approaches the 2024 elections.
According to him, unchecked speech could lead to confusion and potentially threaten the country’s security.
In an interview on Adom FM’s morning show, Dwaso Nsem, Dr. Suleiman stated that misinformation must be curbed, as it plays a significant role in destabilizing societies.
“We need to be careful about how we express ourselves because certain words and actions can lead to confusion and threaten the security of the country. Misinformation is very dangerous, and we must eliminate it to protect the peace and stability of our nation,” he said.
Dr. Suleiman pointed out that in many instances where coups have occurred in other countries, the abuse of freedom of speech played a role in creating division and unrest.
“Any country that experiences a coup often has the misuse of information at its core,” he noted.
Dr. Suleiman also warned that certain forms of speech can have severe consequences.
“There are times when we need to draw the line, especially when people speak ill of others in a way that could harm the security of the state. Everyone is entitled to freedom of speech, but not at the cost of causing harm or confusion,” he stated.
In his view, statements that threaten the security of the country or individuals should not be tolerated.
“If someone’s words bring harm or mayhem to others and threaten national security, it should not be encouraged,” he said.
As Ghana heads into the December 7, 2024, general elections, Dr. Suleiman called on Ghanaians to be mindful of their words to avoid creating unnecessary tensions.
“As the election draws near, we must all be cautious about what we say, so as not to cause confusion. If security agents need to intervene to maintain peace, they should do so, but beyond that, freedom of speech should remain intact,” he concluded.
