You are wrong; respect the constitution – K.T. Hammond to Bagbin [Listen]

-

Trade and Industry Minister Kobina Tahir Hammond (K.T.) has slammed Speaker Alban Bagbin over his recent actions.

K.T. Hammond’s criticism follows Bagbin’s claims on Wednesday, accusing both the President and the Judiciary of colluding to undermine the authority of Parliament.

This statement came after Speaker Bagbin controversially declared four parliamentary seats vacant, a decision later stayed by the Supreme Court.

These developments have intensified tensions, with the New Patriotic Party (NPP) accusing the Speaker of deepening political divisions in the country.

They argue that instead of respecting the Supreme Court’s ruling, Bagbin should have directed the National Democratic Congress (NDC) MPs to occupy their designated seats in the Chamber.

However, speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, K.T. Hammond disagreed with the Speaker’s actions.

“You were wrong, and everything you’re doing is not right. Learn to respect the authority of the Constitution,” he said.

To Mr Hammond, Speaker Bagbin’s actions will only impact the country’s political environment negatively.

“You owe it to the good people of Ghana to do the right thing. Don’t attack the Supreme Court,” he added.

The Trade and Industry Minister went on to say that Bagbin was “completely out of place and wrong,” and advised him to stop speaking on the matter and allow his lawyers to handle it.

“The standing orders are bogus. You have to respect the authority of the Constitution and the Supreme Court.”

Hammond warned that the public is suffering as a result of these ongoing disputes.

“In the end, it’s the good people of Ghana who lose. We are halting a lot of important business that needs to be done in the House,” he stated.

He also accused Bagbin and the Speaker’s party allies of pursuing an agenda that is disrupting Parliament’s work.
