The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has stated that the current parliamentary standoff does not amount to a constitutional crisis.
Addressing the media in Accra on Wednesday, Speaker Bagbin emphasized that the situation is a constitutional matter and urged calm among Ghanaians, assuring that the matter is under control.
“There’s no constitutional crisis in this country. I repeat, there’s no constitutional crisis in this country,” he said.
He, however, indicated that the impasse reflects a collusion between the Executive and Judiciary to undermine the authority of Parliament.
This conflict, he noted, poses a challenge to parliamentary independence, adding that efforts to limit Parliament’s authority set a troubling precedent for Ghana’s democracy.
He insisted that Parliament has the constitutional right to revoke the seats of the four MPs who have crossed party lines or declared their intention to run as independents on December 7.
The Speaker justified this stance by arguing that the MPs’ decisions compromise their allegiance to their parties.
