GFA must be blamed for Black Stars’ struggles – Former Kotoko striker

-

Former Ghanaian international Yahaya Mohammed has criticized the Ghana Football Association (GFA) for the Black Stars’ recent poor performances.

The senior national team has struggled in recent matches, including the ongoing 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers. Ghana remains winless after four games, with two draws and two losses, placing them in third position with just two points out of a possible twelve.

These results mean the Black Stars risk missing out on the AFCON tournament for the first time in 20 years.

In an interview with Asempa FM’s Ultimate Sports Show, Mohammed, a former striker for Asante Kotoko, attributed the team’s struggles to the GFA’s player selection, arguing that the association is consistently inviting players who lack a deep understanding of Ghana’s style of play.

“The Ghana Football Association (GFA) is not doing enough to ensure the Black Stars perform. They invite players from all sorts of places to join the team without knowing how we play. These players don’t know our DNA,” he said.

Referring to recent performances, Mohammed questioned the contributions of specific players, saying, “Over the weekend, we saw Semenyo against Manchester City, and I asked myself, is this the same player who plays for Ghana? Thomas Partey mostly plays at right back for Arsenal, but can he do the same for the Black Stars?”

According to Mohammed, the GFA must do more to ensure players understand the pride and expectations associated with playing for Ghana.

“All these things fall at the doorstep of the Ghana Football Association because they need to do things right. These players playing abroad always feel they are doing us a favor by playing for us, which should not be the case. They don’t understand that we don’t like to draw as a country, and we don’t like defeat, but when we lose or draw, they don’t care. So, the GFA must wake up and ensure these things stop,” he added.

Ghana’s next AFCON qualifiers will take place later this month. They will play Angola in Luanda on November 15, followed by a home match against Niger on November 18, as they seek to keep their qualification hopes alive.
