Chiefs in Nkwanta South petition Mahama over recurring conflict

-

In a move reflecting the ongoing tensions in the Nkwanta South municipality of the Oti Region, the chiefs have formally petitioned National Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate John Dramani Mahama to intervene if elected president on December 7.

The chiefs, representing various traditional councils, expressed deep concern over the rising unrest, which they believe threatens the peace and stability of the area.

The conflict reportedly stems from disputes over land and the celebration of a traditional Yam Festival at the Nkwanta M/A JHS “A” school park, leading to violent confrontations among rival factions.

In their address welcoming the NDC presidential candidate to Nkwanta South on his campaign tour, the chiefs highlighted that the situation has not only disrupted daily life but also instilled fear among residents, hindering economic activities and social cohesion.

Speaking on behalf of the chiefs, Steve Yaw Obour emphasized that the involvement of the former president and NDC flagbearer could facilitate constructive dialogue among the parties involved, fostering understanding and cooperation.

In their petition, the chiefs called for immediate dialogue and mediation to address the underlying issues fueling the discord. They urged him, when elected president, to engage with the various traditional rulers to foster a spirit of unity and cooperation.

The former president and NDC presidential candidate urged the people of Nkwanta South to vote for the NDC party on December 7 to “save their country from the NPP government.”

He also promised to establish a technical university in the Oti Region to advance the country’s industrial revolution.
