Former General Secretary of the Christian Council, Rev Dr Kwabena Opuni Frimpong has emphasised the need to prevent the loss of innocent lives during elections in Ghana.
According to him, the nation cannot continue to lose lives or have people maimed in the quest for political power.
Speaking on Adom FM Dwaso Nsem, Rev. Opuni-Frimpong stated that it is time for political actors and relevant stakeholders to recognize the gravity of electoral violence and related deaths.
“Eight people died in the last election, and some think the number is insignificant, but if you consider these people as breadwinners and the challenges for their surviving families, we will begin to appreciate the essence of peace.
“People go for rallies, and there is the firing of shots; in Agona West, Nima-Maamobi, and other places—why should people carry guns for a walk? Our hands are so bloody. If we’re not careful, this violence will repeat in the next election. Even with what is happening in Bawku, we must be cautious,” he admonished.
He further noted that he has visited the family of one of the victims of the Techiman shooting incident, describing their living conditions as heartbreaking.
“The man left behind his wife and four children, who are all now growing up. How will they survive?” he questioned.
Rev Dr Opuni-Frimpong noted that with about 32 days to the December 7 election, political actors must commit to peace to prevent such unfortunate incidents which are a disgrace to the nation.
