Is ‘Azorka’ a crime? NDC chair reacts to the use of his name amid campaign launch [Listen]

The First Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Sofo Awudu Azorka, has defended the use of the name ‘Azorka’, stating that it is nothing criminal.

According to him, the NDC does not have any vigilante groups, refuting claims that his supporters are being labelled as such.

“Azorka is just a name. It is not a crime to use it. If NDC supporters want to wear party T-shirts and launch their campaign, how is that a crime? They are rebranding my boys as vigilantes, which is not true,” he said.

He made this known in an interview on Adom FM’s morning show, Dwaso Nsem, following criticism over the launch of the Ashanti Regional chapter of the Azorka Boys, which some allege to be a vigilante group.

In response to the concerns raised by the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr. Azorka mentioned that if the name “Azorka” is irritating, they would consider changing it.

“We will cancel the Azorka name and launch our campaign again next week if it bothers the NPP,” he stated.

Speaking on reports of arrest, Azorka clarified that the police only invited the group’s leadership for discussions and accused the NPP of misrepresenting their intentions.

“We were there to launch our campaign, but they told the police we were there to cause mayhem,” he explained.

He assured the public that the boys’ presence was strictly for a house-to-house campaign adding that their actions were focused on promoting development.

“Next week, we will launch the campaign and carry out our house-to-house activities,” he added.

When questioned about a flier featuring his photo and other NDC executives for the event, Azorka admitted he had not seen it.

“I was just invited to help them launch their campaign,” he said.

Addressing the political climate in the Ashanti Region, Azorka noted that the NPP has not done anything for the region.

“The Ashantis know that they will vote for Mahama to fix the region.”

Critics of the Azorka Boys’ launch raised concerns about potential chaos and disruption of peaceful coexistence among residents in the region.

The event took place at Aboabo-Kunkunte Park from 6 AM to 6 PM and was attended by several top NDC officials, including Azorka himself.
