Some residents of Bawku are calling for the immediate lifting of the curfew imposed on the town, urging authorities to prioritize a fast-tracked mediation process between opposing factions to restore lasting peace.
The curfew, which took effect on October 28, was introduced to curb the violent clashes and killings that erupted following the return of Mr. Seidu Abagre, who was controversially enskinned as the Bawku Naba in February 2023.
The restriction, running from 6:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m., has sparked frustration among locals who say it has disrupted their daily routines without addressing the conflict’s root causes.
In an interview with JoyNews, one resident criticized the government’s handling of the situation, suggesting that a similar curfew should be imposed in Walewale, where killings have also been reported.
“The killings in Bawku are very bad, but the killings in Walewale are also bad. If they are imposing a curfew here, there should be a curfew in Walewale too,” the resident said.
Frustration with the security measures was further expressed as another resident urged the government to withdraw military personnel from the area.
“Bawumia and Akufo-Addo should give us a break. We don’t want soldiers here anymore,” the individual remarked.
Another resident added, “We will not obey the curfew until the truth comes out. We want justice, not curfews.”
